1. Absolutely gorgeous, I find Davis’ tone and control to me remarkable in this period, sinewy and emotional.  Great cover song for today.

    Miles Davis - Summertime

Jazz doesn’t offer much support for the concept of “covers”, but since Davis’ version of Summertime [written by George Gershwin for his 1935 opera Porgy and Bess]  almost certainly isn’t the one that immediately comes to mind for most people, I’m giving it a pass for cover Friday. Plus, I love this record.

    So, happy cover Friday, kids.

Also: there are so many good and very different takes on this song. Miles, Billie Holiday, Janis, Ella/Louis, the Doors, Sidney Bechet, Herb Alpert…got a favorite recording that I should know about?

  1. torrid-wind answered: Sure jazz has a concept for covers. They’re either called jazz standards or the artist is derided for selling out by doing pop material.
