This is a band from Brooklyn called Love Story. Earlier this year a friend gave me a CDR of their stuff, and this is the first song, called “Passerby.” It’s the most epic one minute, 44 second song I have ever heard, this big tumbling mess.

I went to their “record release show” at Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn back in May, and it was atrocious in a refreshing way. They were playing for friends, clearly not giving a fuck about how they sounded or whether anyone liked it (they were happily drunk) and it all felt like they started a band because it seemed fun to start a band. There was no desire for career/listeners/anything, just some kids beating out some songs. And yeah, most of them were terrible but this one is genuinely great. One great moment will always count as success in my book.

emusic describes Congotronics as “Jimi Hendrix meets Talking Heads in the heart of the Congo” on their top albums of the decade list. I could not resist the Remain In Light-baiting and dove in. I still have to fully digest the album, but those amped up thumb pianos hit a sweet spot between tone and distortion.

New Yorkers are a notoriously tough crowd. But I was struck by what I overheard a stranger say. She was a doubter won over yesterday. “It will be fascinating when they’re gone,” she mused.

It took me a second to realize what she meant: that the gates, by ravishing the eye, have already impressed an image of the park on the memories of everyone who has seen them. And like all vivid memories, that image can take a place in the imagination, like a smell or some notes of music or a breeze, waiting to be rekindled.
