41 years ago today the world lost the great Janis Joplin.
Here she is with a hurricane-force cover of Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters’ Cry Baby in 1970.

In 1983 I backpacked through Europe with a Sony Walkman and a few cassettes - Synchronicity, Rumors, Streetlight Serenade and Turnstiles.
I listened to these tapes hundreds and hundreds of times.
The Police - “Synchronicity I” - Synchronicity. If you’ve had a conversation with me regarding synchronous vs. asynchronous social and contrarian value in the past 6 months, you’ll know why I posted this song. More on this topic soon.
With one breath, with one flow
You will know
Synchronicity
A sleep trance, a dream dance,
A shared romance,
Synchronicity
A connecting principle,
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible.
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectable
Yet nothing is invincible
If we share this nightmare
Then we can dream
Spiritus mundi
If you act, as you think,
The missing link,
Synchronicity
We know you, they know me
Extrasensory
Synchronicity
A star fall, a phone call,
It joins all,
Synchronicity
It’s so deep, it’s so wide
Your inside
Synchronicity
Effect without a cause
Sub-atomic laws, scientific pause
Synchronicity… -

Whenever you listen to a piece of music, what you are actually doing is hearing the latest sentence in a very long story you’ve been listening to — all the pieces of music you’ve ever heard.
— Brian Eno, in conversation with David Mitchell, The Believer (When asked, “Do you agree that no new genre is ever invented, but rather hybridised from something that was there before?” Eno answers: “Yes. Nothing starts from nowhere.”)

truth be told, this might be my least favorite MG’s record (but again that’s like saying I have a least favorite pizza joint)
that being said, I am not sure there is better song about being 17 years old anywhere. anywhere
